From the moment the production commences we’re taken on a journey to Africa, specifically Ibadan, Nigeria.
Bright, bold, and vibrant, this theatrical version of Anna Hibiscus’ Song is an adaptation of Atinuke and Lauren Tobia’s book. It is an engaging and endearing production with a strong message about the beauty of expressing one’s happiness and sharing our feelings. Using puppetry to bring Anna to life, we meet her family and explore how she handles her big feelings of happiness.
The production, adapted and directed by Mojisola Kareem, also examines what it means to be different and the importance of community. Strong performances from the cast, whose vivacious and high-spirited energy kept the audience engaged through music, song, and dance, reinforced the messages.
I really enjoyed the inclusion of Yoruba as part of the script, it made me feel even more connected to the story and gave my daughter another chance to be immersed in elements of the language outside of her home environment. Julius Obende as the storyteller did a fantastic job with the talking drum and overall oration. The entire cast including Saskia Rose (Anna Hibiscus) Althea Burey, Dorthea Darby, Malick Bojang were brilliant. And, it was great to see Nollywood royalty, Kehinde Bankole (Auntie Jolie and Storyteller) on stage.
This is a joyful production which deserves to be seen far and wide.
