The Cocoa Butter Club is a unique cabaret collective celebrating queer performer of colour. I love a ‘does what it says on the tin’ kind of name and The Cocoa Butter Club does this giving a huge clue and connotation of the dark and sexy smoothness contained within.
Past a quick scan of the flyer, I wasn’t expecting much more than a bit of burlesque and a few jokes but actually…. oh my… and oh my goodness! There’s never a dull moment in this show – from singing and dancing to burlesque, and hula hoops and pole dancing to poetry – the list is not exhaustive! Be prepared for what can only be described as an explosion of quality queer cabaret.
There’s plenty of eyebrow raising moments, laughter and opportunity to get involved with the performers… its very camp- and you know what? You’ve probably seen better singers and dancers elsewhere but for the fun factor and a night out of the ordinary, it can’t be matched.
Personally, my favourite acts were the pole dancers who were amazing. The strength required to manipulate the body in such a way while looking sexy is no easy feat – then to execute it with perfect style and grace is phenomenal.
If you’re up for something different then maybe the place ‘where the melanated are celebrated’ is exactly the place to be!
