I jumped at the chance to experience the Tall Stories’ adaptation of Room on the Broom, the best-selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler with my two and half year old daughter. If you’re not familiar with the story it follows The witch and her cat who are travelling on their broomstick when they pick up some hitchhikers – a friendly dog, a beautiful green bird and a frantic frog. However, the broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – it snaps in two, just as the hungry dragon appears!

No time is wasted in bringing the story to life with the signature vitality and exuberance that Tall Stories productions are known for. Every cast member gives their all and whilst not every song is necessarily as catchy as one would like the performances are delightful and entertaining.

This story is perfect for the stage with a wonderfully designed backdrop and the inclusion of puppetry to bring the hitch hiking animal characters to life. My little one was captivated which reflects how engaging the performances were because overall she managed to pay attention throughout – it was humourous, upbeat and endearing.
