There’s a reason why pantomimes are a festive favourite. They bring us together and give us an opportunity to bask in the glory of pure jovial creativity. What better way to start panto season than with this modern interpretation of the classic tale of Pinocchio.

Directed by Omar F Okai (Black British Theatre Awards), with the writing skills of Trish Cooke, musical composition of Robert Hyman and choreographed by Claudimar Neto we were treated to a wondrous and magical stage show.

Energetically and vibrantly performed by a joyous cast including Michael Bertenshaw as Blue Rinse Fairy, Dylan Collymore as Pinocchio, Tom Morakinyo as Geppetto and Nicole Louise Lewis as Krik-Krak we were taken on a journey of hope, redemption and family.

The musical score, singing and choreography were delightful and brought the story to life with such gusto and vigour that it was difficult to take one’s eyes off the stage. My plus one was my two and a half year old toddler daughter and aside from a few ‘scary’ moments (the circus scene) she was captivated and in awe. I was worried that the two hour run time (plus interval) would be too much for her but she was engaged throughout and even clapped at the end without any prompting by myself so evidently she thoroughly enjoyed the show.

The humour was contagious with some cheeky jokes that only adults will understand without the risk of children asking awkward questions. A special mention to set and costume designer Stewart J. Charlesworth whose designs were simply beguiling.

The lessons that Pinocchio learned along the way served as a great reminder to audience members of all ages. Go and see it. You won’t regret it.

It really is for all ages.

Need to know: Pinocchio plays at Stratford East until 4 Jan 2025
