Unconventional storytelling and the 00s have never been as enjoyable as they are in dkfash‘s “Is Dat U Yh?” After its successful debut at Brixton House’s ‘Housemates’ Festival, this innovative and nostalgic play introduces us to four dynamic young women—Debz, Tolu, Reena, and Tia—as they navigate the rollercoaster ride of womanhood, sisterhood, and adolescence through a series of vignettes that perfectly capture the adolescent experience as well as the unique challenges of growing up black.
At its core, the success of “Is Dat U Yh?” lies in the stellar performances delivered by Adeola Yemitan, Antonia Layiwola, Rachel Ridley, and Zakiyyah Deen. As the spirited “Back of the Bus Queens,” they infuse the stage with infectious energy and impeccable comedic timing, effortlessly channelling the spirit of youth.
One moment, we’re witnessing them rehearse dance routines in their bedrooms; the next, we’re joining them at the tail end of a free 55-minute phone call, witnessing their race against the clock before hanging up and calling back for another free 55 minutes.
It’s in these specific details, ones that hinge on an understanding of youth culture, that the play generates its strongest sense of identity. Depending on your appreciation, knowledge, or experience of cultural milestones like So Solid Crew, The Trocadero, and Kat Slater, you may find the play’s narrative bouncing around a little too wildly.
However, writer-director dkfash doesn’t solely rely on jokes or easy nostalgia trips. She also demonstrates an astute eye for detail and a nuanced understanding of the black teenage experience. Moments where the cast break the fourth wall or where one of the girls is teased for listening to Blink 182 are notable for their pathos, empathy, and thoughtfulness.
While at times it may feel like the show is teetering on the edge of chaos, the sound design and movement create an immersive theatrical experience that proudly rejects the confines of a traditional play. “Is Dat U Yh?” celebrates identity and friendship in a refreshing, inspiring, and much-needed manner.
Ultimately, the play is a celebration of joy and a testament to the talent of its creator. And if you find yourself reminiscing about your teenage crushes, bus rides, house parties, or Trocadero memories for days afterward, then you’ve truly experienced the magic of “Is Dat U Yh?”
