Following a hugely successful event at Birmingham Hippodrome earlier this year, Mawa Theatre Company has announced that they will be hosting a Monologue Slam at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2023.
In an exciting collaboration, The UK’s first all Black, all-female Shakespeare Company will bring together some of the UK’s most exciting up-and-coming Black, female talent for a showcase of Shakespeare’s best-loved monologues soundtracked by a live DJ, with special musical guests throughout the evening.
Following an open audition process, 20 participants will perform some of Shakespeare’s best-loved monologues with the opportunity for performers to showcase their skills for a welcoming audience in front of a panel of industry judges.
Artistic Director of Mawa Theatre Company Maisey Bawden says: “We are so excited to be bringing Mawa’s Monologue Slam to the home of Shakespeare! Having formed in the midst of a pandemic we never take for granted the impact of live theatre and to be able to give up-and-coming Black and Black Mixed Race female artists from all different walks of life the opportunity to perform on this iconic stage is such a blessing.”
Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe Michelle Terry says: “Lots of people talk about making a change but a handful of people actually do it – and Mawa Theatre Company is absolutely those people. I am so proud that Shakespeare’s Globe is able to host this incredibly exciting and important night, and support these vital, game-changing women.”
