Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu – Our Mighty Groove, Sadler’s Wells East – interview

About Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu is a Choreographer, Self-First Instigator, Movement Director, and the Founder and joint CEO of Uchenna, an international touring dance company. Her mission is to Empower, Entertain and Educate through dance and movement, enabling each person she engages with to Think Fierce, Be Fabulous and Live Free Spirited.  

Her work in theatre as a Choreographer and Movement Director includes The Enormous Crocodile (Leeds Playhouse and Regents Park Open Air Theatre); Urine Town (Guildhall School of Music and Drama); Family Tree (Greenwich and Docklands International Festival), Animal Farm (National Youth Theatre); The Woods and A Kind Of People (Royal Court, London), Princess and the Hustler and The Gift (Eclipse Theatre), Red Dust Road (National Theatre of Scotland), Midlife (Diverse City), The Seven Ages of Patience (The Kiln Theatre) , and Co-Director for Provok’d and POD (Guildhall School of Music and Drama).  

As Choreographer for Uchenna, she has created their four touring shows Our Mighty Groove, The Head Wrap Diaries, Hansel and Gretel and The Head Wrap Diaries – Fierce and Free

Internationally, she has worked as a Mass Movement Choreographer for Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies including London 2012, Sochi 2014, Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 and the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan 2017.  

She is Director of Empowerment at People Make It Work; a community of 60 freelance cultural leaders, with a shared mission to support the cultural sector to change, develop and transform so that Everyone’s Culture is created.  

Independently, Vicki is the Self-First Instigator, empowering artistic and creative women to kickstart the habit of putting themselves first. 

Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu’s immersive dance production, Our Mighty Groove, which will be the inaugural show at Sadler’s Wells East in February 2025. The Sadler’s Wells production sees a cast of young dancers from east London join Igbokwe-Ozoagu’s Uchenna in a celebration of community and the power of the dance floor.  

Set in Club Groove where the audience is both spectator and participant, Our Mighty Groove incorporates Igbokwe-Ozoagu’s signature blend of club styles – house, waacking and vogue – fused with African and contemporary dance. Our Mighty Groove runs at Sadler’s Wells East from Thursday 6 – Sunday 9 February 2025. Following the show, the Club Groove after party takes over the dancefloor at Sadler’s Wells East where the audience is invited to continue the celebration.
