Reasons to be Pretty is a play by Neil LaBute, his first to be staged on Broadway in New York, and now showing in London at the Almeida. The plot centers around four young working class friends and lovers who become increasingly dissatisfied with their dead-end lives and each other. Following The Shape of Things and Fat Pig, it is the final installment of a trilogy that focuses on the modern day obsession with beauty.

The play opens with a verbal match that would make even Jerry Springer blush, the catalyst to this explosion is when the play’s protagonist Greg, played by Tom Burke, is overheard giving his opinion on his girlfriend’s face, not a positive opinion as you would expect from your lover. This moment of immature masculine chatter is enough to completely destroy the relationship he has with his girlfriend, Steph played by Sian Brooke. What ensues is Greg’s growth; we really do see him turn from a boy into a man with real mature feelings and a better understanding of the feelings of women and our issues with beauty. Fat Pig, it is the final installment of a trilogy that focuses on the modern day obsession with beauty.

The play is absolutely hilarious, I really found my self laughing out loud and really enjoyed the onscreen energy, every character performed their role with such fervour I couldn’t keep my eyes off of them. The play is set in the US; which I think works even though LaBute has brought it to London and could have set it in England. The American accents just make it that little bit more entertaining, it’s like watching your favourite American sitcom without the makeup adverts. Even Billie Piper’s accent is very believable; she really does give a great performance as the pretty, pregnant wife of Greg’s philandering pal Kent, played by Kieran Bew. Fat Pig, it is the final installment of a trilogy that focuses on the modern day obsession with beauty.

I would recommend you go and see this while it is showing at the Almeida until January. Fat Pig, it is the final installment of a trilogy that focuses on the modern day obsession with beauty.
